St. Theodore Stratelates

St. Marks Square, Venice

To create an appropriate statue of St. Theodore Stratelates, the original patron saint of Venice before St. Mark was adopted, Venetian workmen put the head of a Roman emperor on an early statue of St. George. The present statue is a copy; the original is in the Ducal Palace (Shaw-Kennedy, 24).
